Yun Zeng

China

On the stage of the 16th International Tchaikovsky Competition (2019), Yun has become the first ever gold medalist in the brass category and the first Chinese gold medalist in the instrumental categories at the age of 19. Two years later, at the 70th ARD International Music Competition, he, as the first Asian horn player and first Chinese wind player, was awarded the 2nd prize, the special prize for the best interpretation of the commissioned work and the special prize for the best performance at the semi-final given by the Munich Chamber Orchestra. Yun, still in his first year of graduate studies at the Central Conservatory of Music, is already considered a rising star in today's music world. Along with succeeding in Tchaikovsky and ARD, he is the laureate of 13 major international horn competitions such as Prague Spring (2018), Città di Porcia (2017), Lieksa (2016), etc.

 

Yun has appeared as a soloist with Mariinsky Orchestra, Central Conservatory of Music Symphony Orchestra, National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra, Guiyang Symphony Orchestra (as Artist-in-Residence in the Season 2020-2021), Qingdao Symphony Orchestra. Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Hangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Suzhou Symphony Orchestra, Xi'an Symphony Orchestra, Sichuan Symphony Orchestra and Sichuan Philharmonic Orchestra and other distinguished orchestras. His performances had been broadcast by China Central Television, All-Russia State Television Radio Broadcasting Company, BR-Klassik and Medici.tv. In 2020, Yun had been giving a 100-minutes-long recital which was praised by renowned critic Keju Zhang: "...presenting impeccable structural beauty, mellow bel-canto-sound and rich phrasing..." at Jaguar Shanghai Symphony Hall. 

 

Meanwhile, being active on playing in front of orchestra doesn't stop Yun launching his career in orchestra. Since 2022, he became the principal horn of Staatskapelle Berlin. He also appeared as guest hornist with NCPA Orchestra, World Orchestra for Peace, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Hangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Suzhou Symphony Orchestra, Ningbo Symphony Orchestra, and had played under the baton of Valery Gergiev, Christoph Eschenbach, Feng Yu, Guoyong Zhang, Jia Lü, Lin Chen, Lu Yu, etc.


Born into a musical family in the year of 1999, Yun began learning French horn with his father, Jie Zeng, principal horn player of Sichuan Symphony Orchestra, at the age of 6. He was both times the first place in major assessment when admitted to the middle school as well as undergraduate studies of Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM) in 2011 and 2017 respectively, in the class of prof. Quan Wen. During this period, he was funded by ‘Best of the Best Project’ (2012-2021) – a program designed by the conservatory especially for talented young musicians, and 'Edifier Musician Foundation' (2014). In academic year 2019-2020, he was studying in Haute Ecole de Musique de Genève ,supported by Erasmus Project, with prof. Bruno Schneider. In 2021, he received his bachelor's degree and continued his graduated studies at CCOM.
