Pierre-Antoine Tremblay

Pierre-Antoine Tremblay pursues a career specializing in the practice of historical instruments. He plays regularly as first horn with top period-instrument ensembles such as Europa Galante (Italy), Anima Eterna (Belgium), the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées (France) and Tafelmusik (Canada). He was also invited to perform with the Freiburger Barockorchester (Germany), the Collegium Vocale Gent (Belgium), Ensemble Pygmalion (France), B’Rock (Belgium), MusicAeterna (Russia), Concerto Copenhagen (Denmark), Arion Baroque Orchestra (Canada) and Capriccio Stravagante (France). His musical activities over the past few years have led him to more than thirty countries across Europe, North America, South America, and Asia, working with renowned conductors such as Frans Brüggen, Philippe Herreweghe, Fabio Biondi, René Jacobs, Christophe Rousset, Sir Simon Rattle, Pablo Heras-Casado, Raphaël Pichon and Ton Koopman.
He has performed several times as a soloist, most notably with the Arion Baroque Orchestra, the Freiburger Barockorchester, Les Idées Heureuses, and the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, playing concertos by Mozart, Telemann, Handel, Heinichen, Vivaldi, and Richard Strauss. In 2014, he founded in Barcelona the Dialoghi Ensemble to explore the classical and romantic repertoire on period instruments. The ensemble’s debut recording featuring Mozart and Beethoven quintets with fortepiano was released by Harmonia Mundi in 2018.
After early studies on the modern horn at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec and at McGill University in Montreal, he pursued his studies on the natural horn with Teunis van der Zwart at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he obtained a master’s degree in early music in 2012.
Pierre-Antoine is also passionate about teaching the natural horn. He was invited to give masterclasses at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Singapore, the J.F. Oberlin University of Tokyo, the Amsterdam Conservatory, the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, and the Katarina Gurska School of Music of Madrid. He taught natural horn at McGill University in Montreal in 2019-20. He is regularly invited by the Jeune Orchestre de l’Abbaye (France) as a coach.
Enthusiastic about history and instruments, he owns a collection of early horns, which features two original natural horns by Marcel-Auguste Raoux and Courtois Neveu Aîné, as well as a Vienna horn by Leopold Uhlmann. He collaborates with horn maker Richard Seraphinoff in researching and designing new historical horn models.
