ALPINE SYMPHONY COMPETITION
**Application deadline JUNE 1st, 2023**
 

One of the top features of this year’s symposium will be the outdoor concert part of the Lanaudière International Festival, where Schumann’s Konzertstück and Strauss’s Alpine Symphony, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin will be presented.

 

We are happy to offer the chance to 9 registered students to participate in this concert, by joining Stefan Dohr, Yun Zeng and Sarah Willis in the offstage horns. Auditions will be held on Tuesday, July 25th.

Competition Rules and Regulations

  1. All competitors must be registered for the full week of IHS55.

  2. Competition deadline is June 1st, 2023.

  3. Members must be 28 and younger as of July 1st, 2023.

  4. Individual members are responsible for their own travel, room & board, IHS55 registration, etc.

  5. The host has the right to cancel the competition at any time.

  6. The IHS55 Alpine Symphony Competition Committee has the right to cancel winners at no cost to IHS55 if the winners fail to abide by all Competition Rules and Regulations.

  7. Competition Judges reserve the right to declare more or less winners than announced.

  8. Winners will get to play as part of the offstage horns in the Alpine Symphony, presented by the Orchestre Métropolitain, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, on July 28th, 2023.

  9. Winners of this competition will not receive any financial compensation for their participation in this concert. 

  10. 10. Dress code for the concert is all black (shoes, sox, shirt and pants or long skirt, or dress)

HORN QUARTET COMPETITION | PRE UNIVERSITY DIVISION
Application deadline July 1st, 2023.
 

Repertoire

  1. Select a minimum of 8 minutes of music, not to exceed 15 minutes. 

  2. One work must be originally composed for horn quartet. 

  3. Group may select single movement(s) out of a multi-movement work.

  4. Remaining program should be diverse and should highlight the Quartet’s strengths.

Competition Rules and Regulations

  1. All Quartet members must be 18 or younger and have not begun a 4-year college degree as of July 1st, 2023.

  2. All Quartet members must be registered for the Young Horn Player’s Day at IHS55, Thursday July 27th, 2023.

  3. Competition registration deadline is July 1st, 2023.

  4. Individual members are responsible for their own travel, room & board, registration, etc.

  5. One Quartet member should be designated as the point person and should complete the registration form on the IHS55 website.

  6. The IHS55 Horn Quartet Competition Committee has the right to cancel a winner at no cost to IHS55 if the winner fails to abide by all Competition Rules and Regulations.

  7. Competition Judges reserve the right to not declare a winner.

  8. Quartets may not perform with a conductor.

  9. Winning Quartet will perform at the Awards Concert on Saturday July 29th, 2023. 

  10. For those wishing to apply for multiple competitions, please submit separate forms.

HORN QUARTET COMPETITION | UNIVERSITY DIVISION

  5. Chosen repertoire may include auxiliary players such as percussion or keyboard if originally written for the piece (no reductions). IHS55 WILL provide equipment for auxiliary players within accessible limits and reason. IHS55 WILL NOT provide players for auxiliary parts.

  2. All Quartet members must be registered for the full week of IHS55.

  3. Competition registration deadline is July 1st, 2023.

JAZZ HORN COMPETITION
Application deadline July 1st, 2023.

Repertoire

  1. Blues. Any standard blues head. Be prepared to play multiple choruses of soloing.

  2. One contrasting tune that falls into any one of the following stylistic categories, including at least one chorus of soloing:

    • Medium Swing

    • Up-tempo Swing

    • BalladM

    • Latin

  3. The competition will take place with a live rhythm section—piano, bass, drums. Please include the names of the tunes you are choosing to play on the registration form and be sure to include the concert pitch key you intend to play them in.

 

Competition Rules and Regulations

  1. Competitors must be 25 years of age or younger as of July 1st, 2023.

  2. Competitors must be registered for the full week of IHS55.

  3. Competition registration deadline is July 1st, 2023.

  4. Competitors are responsible for their own travel, room & board, IHS55 registration, etc.

  5. The IHS55 Jazz Horn Competition Committee has the right to cancel a winner at no cost to IHS55, if the winner fails to abide by all Jazz Horn Competition Rules and Regulations.

  6. Competition Judges reserve the right to not declare a winner.

  7. Competition winner(s) may be offered an opportunity to perform on a concert during the symposium, at the discretion of the judges.

NATURAL HORN COMPETITION
Application deadline July 1st, 2023.

    1. F. Duvernoy - Nocturne pour cor et harpe - to be played with piano

    2. J.-F. Gallay - Préludes non-mesuré—choose ONE—to be played on the same crook as the Duvernoy

Competition Rules and Regulations

  1. All competitors must be registered for the full week of IHS55.

  2. Competition registration deadline is July 1st, 2023.

  3. Competition is free and open to all players under 30 by July 1st, 2023.

  4. Individual members are responsible for their own travel, room & board, IHS55 registration, etc.

  5. The host has the right to cancel the competition at any time if the minimum number of 3 participants is not reached.

  6. An accompanist will be provided, if needed. Competitors may bring their own accompanist. Piano will be tuned to A=442.

  7. The IHS55 Natural Horn Competition Committee has the right to cancel a winner at no cost to IHS55 if the winner fails to abide by all Competition Rules and Regulations.

  8. Competition Judges reserve the right to not declare a winner.

  9. Winner will receive 1) a refund of the IHS55 registration fee, 2) a certificate, 3) a performance in masterclass with a natural horn Featured Artist, 4) a performance in a Concert on Saturday July 29th, 2023.

YOUTH DAYS SOLO HORN COMPETITION
Application deadline for registration and reception of pre-recorded preliminary round : May 31, 2023.

Repertoire

  1. Registration and Pre-recorded Preliminary Round must be submitted by May 31st, 2023 on the IHS55 website 

    1. W.A. Mozart Concerto in Eb, K. 417, mvt 1 OR W.A. Mozart Concerto in Eb, K. 447, mvt 1 – performed with piano accompaniment 

    2. An etude or a piece for solo horn

 

  1. Final Round (live) on Thursday July 27th at IHS55 – Choose ONE

  2. Registration and Pre-recorded Preliminary Round submission deadline is 11:59 PM on May 31st, 2023 on the IHS55 website. No late submission will be accepted.

  3. Pre-recorded submissions are to be emailed to ihs55montreal@gmail.com

  4. Competition is free and open to all players between 13 and 18 by July 1st, 2023. 

  5. Individuals are responsible for their own travel, room & board, IHS55 Youth Day registration, etc. 

  6. The host has the right to cancel the competition at any time if the minimum number of 3 participants is not reached. 

  7. An accompanist will be provided at the Final Round (live) on Thursday, July 27th, 2023, if needed. Competitors may bring their own accompanist. Piano will be tuned to A=442.

IHS Awards

Applications for IHS awards and contests are available online or by contacting the IHS Executive Director. Send completed applications to the IHS Executive Director, by email at exec-director@hornsociety.org, or by completing an online application.

The preferred language for applications is English; however, applicants whose native language is not English may submit applications in their native language, with an English translation. Outside assistance in completing this translation is acceptable. Versions in both languages must be submitted.

 

Recorded materials must be in MP3 Audio. Other formats may be converted for transmission to the judges but may lose quality in the process.

 

First prize winners of IHS awards and performance contests are not eligible to participate in the same award or contest again. All awards must be used in the year they are awarded. If an award includes IHS membership and the winner is already a member, the membership is extended.

 

The International Horn Society reserves the right to cancel competitions or withhold one or more awards if, in the opinion of the judges, conditions warrant such action.

BARRY TUCKWELL AWARD
Application deadline December 1, 2022.
 

The Barry Tuckwell Award was established in 1997 to honor the IHS Founding President and is designed to encourage and support worthy horn students as they pursue education and performance opportunities by attending and participating in masterclasses and workshops throughout the world.

THE JOHN HAWKINS MEMORIAL AWARD
Application deadline March 20, 2023.
 

Jon Hawkins was a Life Member of the IHS, just starting his career as a professional musician when he met his death in a traffic accident. His parents, Neil and Runa Hawkins, established this award as a memorial to their son. A biography of Jon Hawkins appears on page 108 in the October 1992 issue of The Horn Call.

This award encourages the attendance of deserving, highly motivated horn students at the annual IHS symposiums, where they can be intensely exposed to state-of-the-art levels of performance, pedagogy, equipment, and resources. 

PAUL MANSUR AWARD
Application deadline March 20, 2023.
 

This award, named for the longtime Editor of The Horn Call, Emeritus Dean, and IHS Honorary Member, Paul Mansur. It provides opportunities for full-time students attending the IHS international symposium to receive a lesson from a world renowned artist or teacher.

IHS PREMIER SOLOIST COMPETITION
Application deadline March 20, 2023.
 

The purpose of this competition is to nurture and develop the great horn soloists of the future. All finalists are expected to pay for travel to the Symposium and register as a participant.

FRIZELLE ORCHESTRAL AUDITION CONTESTS
Deadline: online through July 17, 2023, on-site if space is available.

The Dorothy Frizelle Memorial Fund was established in her memory to support the study of orchestral horn playing at IHS workshops.
